If you have a canoe or kayak, there are a lot of watercraft campsites on the State Water Trails, many of which are close to the Cities. There are a couple of dispersed backpacking sites in the Isinours Unit of the RJD Forest. The sites are spacious and provide plenty of. You can find some free municipal/county campsites around, but don't expect any solitude. There are 1-5 Minnesota boondocking areas at this location and the maximum RV length is 15 feet.You can find plenty of secluded, dispersed campsites if you drive up to the Chippewa or Superior NFs, or SFs nearby, when you are no longer "near" the Cities.Travelers have a chance to experience some of the best outdoor adventures that the Upper Midwest has to offer. Southern Minnesota has all the variety and beauty you are looking for in your next adventure along I-90. Since the unicorn above probably doesn't exist, you will want to compromise on at least one of the three points above to open up your options: From rock climbing and windsurfing to fly fishing and stargazing, visitors will be surprised to discover all there is to do just beyond the next Interstate 90 exit. If they do, I would assume they would be occupied by early Thursday each week in the summer. It's possible that these sites exist, but I'm not aware of any. There are a lot of folks who live in the metro that want to find a secluded, drive-up, free campsite within two hours. How hard are you willing to work to get to the campsite?.What do you mean by "dispersed?" But I'm flexible if you have any better ideas :) To answer questions: I would consider anything within a couple hours drive to be "near", and by dispersed camping I mean camping outside of designated sites. North of Tofte and east of Finland just past the Trestle Inn are some great places to camp as well. Wisconsin is definitely on the table, I'm just not as familiar with the rules. Lots of places just off the Sawbill Trail out of Tofte. I've looked at Sand Dunes, Rum River, and Chengwatana, and I was wondering if anyone has a favorite, or another option I could look at. If you know of a fantastic private campground near a state Park I'm also open to that, but honestly I'm excited to try dispersed camping! I'm camping next weekend and all the nearby state parks look full.
